The 2017 edition of Exercise Shared Accord, a multinational exercise held between the US military and a rotating set of African forces, is currently being held at the SA Army Combat Training Centre (CTC) at Lohatla, South Africa. Stepping up from previous Shared Accords held in the country, which focused primarily on humanitarian assistance, this year’s exercise featured a robust peacekeeping intervention scenario featuring realistic ambushes, casualty evacuations, intelligence gathering, and an attack on a rebel encampment. The US contingent was made up primarily by the 101st Airborne Division, and the South African side featured 2 South African Infantry Battalion, a platoon from the Navy’s Maritime Reaction Squadron, with a company from 21 South African Infantry Battalion playing the role of the opposing forces.
