A heat map of fitness tracker data published by Strava (a fitness tracking software maker) has inadvertently provided a wealth of OSINT relating to covert military and other bases and activities across the globe. On the African continent, the compilation of jogging routes in places of relatively low fitness tracker activity, has revealed the presence of (predominantly Western) personnel at military installations across the Sahel and Horn of Africa regions – effectively mapping out base perimeters and outlining transit and patrol routes, not to mention previously unknown ‘hotspots’ of activity around diplomatic structures, possible safe houses, and even a few suspected rendition sites.
