Photographs have emerged online of an AH-1, likely an AH-1F model, bearing ‘Kenya Air Force’ lettering on the side being inspected after delivery by Kenyan military personnel. There have been no formal announcements of AH-1 acquisitions by Kenya, nor is there any mention of a sale from ex-US stocks on the US government’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and Excess Defence Articles (EDA) records, which implies that a third country might be the source of the aircraft. The Kenyan Air Force has been steadily re-equipping in recent years in response to the al-Shabaab insurgency, having taken delivery of six refurbished UH-1H helicopters and in the process of ordering twelve Air Tractor-L3 Technologies AT-802L light attack aircraft and a further twelve armed MD 530 light attack helicopters, both via the FMS process.
