The Rwandan Defence Force has, for the first time, displayed one of the Norinco SH3 122 mm self-propelled artillery systems it is believed to have acquired in 2007. One example of the system took part in Exercise Hard Punch II, an annual combined arms and integrated combat demonstration and evaluation exercise carried out by the force. The 24.5 ton SH3 is built upon a Type 97 chassis and mounts a variant of the Type 96 howitzer, with an estimated maximum firing range of 27 km. Rwanda also has similar 2S1 Gvozdika 122 mm self-propelled howitzers and an unknown number of Israeli Soltam ATMOS 2000 155 mm self-propelled howitzers, one of which was seen in last year’s Hard Punch exercise.
