A fleet of modified Toyota Land Cruisers, to be used for border patrol, has entered service with the South African National Defence Force. The vehicles are equipped with specialised ‘mobility packages’ featuring rollover protection, water tanks, and modular load bay configurations, but make use of substantial Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components and minimal structural changes in order to preserve the vehicle warranties. Each of the 15 infantry companies on border patrol duty will receive 29 vehicles, comprised of 18 in the troop pack configuration and able to carry a stick of five soldiers plus an additional passenger; 3 in the logistics pack configuration carrying general cargo, 120 litres of water, and 180 litres of diesel; 4 with the command and control pack that includes extra radios and power sources for long-range communication and coordination; and 4 ambulances.
