The US State Department added the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), and its leader, Abu Walid al Sahrawi, to a list of specially designated global terrorist organizations.
The ISGS has claimed several relatively small scale attacks and abductions in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Perhaps most prominently, the ISIS affiliate claimed responsibility for the 2017 Tonga Tonga ambush in Niger, which killed four US and five Nigerien soldiers. [source]
